Press releaseGMI Poll: Russians and Americans Wish Terrorism Featured on St. Petersburg G8 Summit AgendaSurvey conducted in all G8 countries also reveals Russians believe USA is unfriendly towards RussiaMoscow, July 11, 2006 – The latest GMI Poll, powered by global market intelligence solutions provider GMI (Global Market Insite, Inc.) and conducted in partnership with Russian research company ASI SPb (Agency of Social Information), shows that both Russians and Americans are concerned with terrorism. 94% of Russian and 92% of American respondents in the poll said they would like to see the topic featured on the agenda of the upcoming G8 Summit chaired for the first time by Russia in St. Petersburg from July 15 th to 17 th. On the flip side, the poll also reveals that the Russians are very concerned about their country’s relationship with the USA - 67% of Russian respondents said that the USA’s attitude toward Russia is unfriendly, while 25% of them believe this attitude is “definitely unfriendly”. The poll was recently conducted among 8,001 respondents in all of the G8 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and USA, to gauge general global knowledge about the G8 and evaluate the current concerns of global consumers of all G8 nations. Other top issues that respondents wished to see included on the G8 agenda were global energy security and the spread of dangerous infections diseases, which are already two of the three topics scheduled for discussion in St. Petersburg. Russian respondents were the least interested of all the countries surveyed in adding global poverty and climate changes to the agenda. The poll shows that Russian respondents are well aware of the existing frictions with the White House on particular topics. This may be the reason why such a high percentage of Russian respondents (16%) said that Russia should solve global issues, including ethnic and religious conflicts, by working alone. France was the only other country that had more than 10% of respondents answer this way, while Italy and the UK were the countries most likely to work with others, followed closely by Germany. Generally, respondents outside of Russia view Russia’s attitude towards their own countries as friendly. Germany showed the best scores - 52% of German respondents believe that Russia has a “somewhat friendly” attitude towards Germany, and 13% said this attitude is “definitely friendly”. While 25% of U.S. respondents knew nothing about the next G8 Summit, over 53% of Russian respondents knew a great deal about it - an overwhelming majority of them are very or slightly positive about Russia hosting this event (84% combined), as compared with 37% respondents worldwide who felt positive or slightly positive about the G8 being held in Russia. The overall respondents’ opinion was that G8 membership should be extended to more countries in the future.
