Online Research continues its march towards dominance.

Outsourcing is the trend for both panels and software platforms.

Cambiar Research, led by distinguished researcher Simon Chadwick, has just released its 2006 study:

“The Online Research Industry, An Update on Current Practices and Trends”

In the 2006, Cambiar Research again surveys market research companies worldwide on their use of online methodologies, which now account for more than $3.1 billion in revenues.

More than 300 companies responded to the Cambiar survey: 53% in the US, 16% in Europe, 12% in Asia-Pacific, and the remaining from Canada, Latin America, the Mid-East and Africa. Revenues under $5 million account for 52% of respondents; $20-$34.9 million for 26%; and above $35 million, 7%. (Those preferring not to state revenues: 14%). Full service companies account for 88% of the study and the remaining 12% are specialists in data collection or processing.

Here are some of the key findings from “The Online Research Industry, An Update on Current Practices and Trends,” for 2006:

Percent of firms conducting research online:
2005
2006
78%
87%

Percent of revenues online:

2005
2006
Mean
29.2
32.2
Median
15.0
20.0
  • 87% of research companies are conducting online research (up from 78% in 2005)
    • Revenue from online methods tops $3 billion
    • 25% of revenues are derived online services, comprising panel, service bureau and software purchases.
    • In terms of mean % of revenue online, the USA is highest at 38.9%, closely followed by Europe at 31.4%. Asia-Pacific and the rest-of the world are growing rapidly with each at about 20%.
    • A hard-core of about 20% of online researchers conducts 60% or more of their work online. “Beginners” are shifting more work online as confidence increases.
  • Research companies have shifted their focus from trying to do everything in-house, to outsourcing key portions of their online offering
    • Those using their own in-house panels to source sample has dropped from 63% in 2005 to 44% in 2006
    • Investment in their own panels is also falling as research companies decide that outsourcing to specialist companies is more economical

The worldwide survey of market research companies, which represents more than $3.1 billion in survey research revenues, reveals that research over the Internet will soon account for one third of the survey market. About 87% of companies surveyed use online methods, and outsourcing is becoming the trend in both software and panels.
